Birmingham Highways

Birmingham Highways is one of Europe’s largest local authority highway projects and incorporates all aspects of highways and infrastructure maintenance as part of the PFI.

The Birmingham Highways PFI involves the maintenance and management of the Birmingham City Council highways network and infrastructure; including approximately 2,600km of carriageways, 5,200km of footways, 600 traffic signals, 76,000 highway trees, 96,000 street lights, 850 highway structures and 3 city centre tunnels.

In addition to routine and reactive maintenance, the project also includes major programmed maintenance and investment such as street lighting and traffic signal replacement, structure refurbishment and carriageway/footway resurfacing.

Following a stakeholder settlement, the project is undergoing a complete restructure and this includes an extensive procurement exercise, which EMS are leading on.
